If you have PCOS, you will be familiar with one of the most frustrating symptoms of the disease, excess facial and body hair. It is also known as hirsutism. 70 to 80% of women suffer from unwanted hair growth,, particularly on the face, chin, lips, chest, and abdomen. The constant cycle of shaving and waxing can be emotionally draining.

The good news? Laser hair removal in Delhi can be an effective solution for managing PCOS-related hair growth. While the entire treatment requires patience, research shows it also delivers satisfactory results for patients. In this blog, let us explore the effectiveness of laser hair treatment for patients with PCOS.

What causes Hair Growth in PCOS?

In women suffering from PCOS, the ovaries produce an excess amount of androgens, the hormones that are found in men. The elevated levels of androgens lead to hirsutism. The hair produced by this disease is thick, dark, and coarse.

Key hormones involved:

  • Testosterone: The primary androgen responsible for male-pattern hair growth
  • DHEA-S: An androgen produced by the adrenal glands
  • Androstenedione: Converts to testosterone in the body

When these hormones are elevated, they stimulate hair follicles to produce terminal hairs (thick, dark, coarse hairs) instead of vellus hairs (fine, light, barely visible hairs).

Difference Between PCOS Hair and Normal Hair

  • PCOS hair is thicker and darker than normal hair.
  • They grow deep under the skin, so they require a very powerful laser.
  • Hormonal imbalance stimulates growth.
  • If hormonal imbalance is not treated, new hair can grow even after laser treatment.
  • People with PCOS need 8 to 12 sessions for hair removal treatment using laser.

Can You Get Laser Hair Removal If You Have PCOS?

Yes. Having PCOS does not automatically prevent you from undergoing laser hair reduction.

Laser technology targets pigment within the hair follicle. The absorbed energy damages the follicle and reduces its ability to produce coarse hair in the future. However, there is one important distinction:

Laser hair treatment in Delhi treats the hair follicle. It does not cure PCOS.

If hormonal stimulation continues, previously untreated or fine follicles may become active later. Therefore, the goal in PCOS patients is generally long-term hair reduction and easier management, rather than promising that every hair will permanently disappear.

Does Laser Hair Removal Work Differently in Women With PCOS?

It can.

Imagine two women undergoing laser treatment for chin hair. One has unwanted hair without an underlying hormonal condition, while the other has active PCOS-associated hirsutism.

Both may respond well initially. However, the woman with PCOS may notice new hair appearing over time because hormonal stimulation is still present. That does not necessarily mean the laser has failed.

It means PCOS-related hair removal often needs to be managed as an ongoing condition. Some patients may need additional sessions or periodic maintenance depending on their hormonal status and individual response.

Which Laser is Best for PCOS Hair Removal?

The choice of laser during your laser treatment in Delhi depends on skin tone, hair colour, hair thickness, and the area being treated. For women with a dark skin tone, diodes and ND lasers are recommended. Treatment is selected according to the patient's skin and hair characteristics.

At EVA, we combine three wavelengths in one single platform.

Wavelength

Common Association

Why It Is Used

755 nm

Alexandrite-type wavelength

Strong melanin absorption; useful for suitable finer and more superficial pigmented hair

808/810 nm

Diode wavelength

Offers a balance of penetration and follicle targeting and is widely used for hair reduction

1064 nm

Nd:YAG-type wavelength

Penetrates deeper and can be useful for coarse, deep-rooted hair and darker skin tones

This combination can be useful for PCOS-related hair reduction because, instead of relying on only one wavelength, the triple-wavelength system accounts for the fact that hair does not always have the same thickness or depth across the face and body, giving the treating doctor greater flexibility when planning treatment for different hair and skin characteristics.

At EVA. Dr Hiranmayi Jha assesses the patient's skin type, hair thickness, and medical history before designing an appropriate treatment plan.

How many Laser Sessions are Required?

Women dealing with hormonal hair require more sessions than patients without PCOS.

  • The initial treatment phase needs 8 to 12 sessions.
  • The sessions will be spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
  • Facial hair requires more frequent sessions.

Why do you need more sessions?

  • Dr Hiranmayi Jha says that only 30% of hair is in the anagen phase. Laser only works on actively growing hair. Due to hormonal fluctuations in PCOS, hair growth patterns become unpredictable, so more sessions are required to capture all hair in the growing phase.
  • You need to manage your PCOS with hormonal treatments; otherwise, your body will keep producing androgens.
  • Hormonal hair follicles are resistant to destruction and thus require more sessions.

Keep Realistic Expectations only.

  • There will be a noticeable reduction in hair density after 6 sessions.
  • You will notice major changes only after 8 to 12 sessions.
  • To maintain the results, you need touch-up sessions every 6 to 12 months.

How to Manage PCOS along With Laser Treatment?

  • Engage in weight-management activities, as they can improve hormonal balance.
  • Weight management can also improve the results of laser treatment.
  • Take a low-glycemic diet and focus on lean proteins and healthy fats.
  • Regular exercise helps to improve androgen levels.
  • Manage stress to balance your hormones.

Book Your First Consultation with Dr Hiranmayi Jha

At EVA, the consultation starts with an assessment of your hair and skin. Dr Hiranmayi Jha may evaluate:

Hair pattern: Is the growth concentrated around the chin and jawline or present across several androgen-sensitive areas?

Hair characteristics: Coarse, dark hair generally responds differently to lasers than very fine or light hair.

Skin type: The laser parameters should be selected based on the patient's skin and hair characteristics to minimise unnecessary skin irritation.

Medical history: Irregular periods, sudden increase in facial hair, acne, weight changes or an existing PCOS diagnosis may indicate that hormonal evaluation is also important.

Laser treatment can then be planned according to these findings rather than following the same protocol for every patient.

Dr Hiranmayi Jha is MBBS, MS Surgery, MCH - Plastic Surgery, AIIMS Alumni, Ex-Associate Consultant in Max Saket, Member of International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon, Member of Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon  and Member of Indian Medical Association. The objective at EVA  is not a promise of permanent hair removal in fixed sessions. The goal is long-term hair reduction treatment  in Delhi.

FAQ

Is laser hair removal safe in PCOS?

PCOS does not determine your suitability for hair removal. Your skin type, hair type, and medical history determine your suitability.

Can laser hair removal help get rid of PCOS-related facial hair permanently?

Laser hair treatment in Delhi can reduce existing follicles, but it does not cure the condition completely. New hair can grow later, so you need maintenance sessions.

Do I need to see a gynaecologist before my laser hair treatment in Delhi?

If you have excessive facial hair, along with irregular periods, acne, and hormonal imbalance, Dr Hiranmayi Jha suggests consulting a gynaecologist as well.

What if hair grows back after laser sessions?

After effective laser hair treatment in Delhi, hair growth will be lighter and less dense. Dr Hiranmayi Jha will guide you if you need:

  • Maintenance laser sessions
  • Adjustment in laser parameters

PCOS Does Not Mean You Have to Keep Fighting Facial Hair Every Week

For many women with PCOS, unwanted facial hair becomes a cycle of threading, waxing or shaving followed by rapid regrowth. Laser hair reduction in Delhi can help break that routine by progressively reducing coarse unwanted hair.

The key is to have realistic expectations: treat the visible hair with a laser while appropriately managing the underlying hormonal condition.

If PCOS-related chin, upper-lip, jawline or body hair is bothering you, you can book a consultation with Dr Hiranmayi Jha at EVA – Eterna Vision & Aesthetics, Delhi to understand whether laser hair reduction is suitable for you and what treatment schedule your hair pattern may require.
