What to Expect after Gynecomastia Surgery?

It is an obvious concern for most patients who undergo gynecomastia surgery. What will be the results and what will the recovery be like? In describing the outcomes, Dr Hiranmayi Jha says that gynecomastia is like a sandwich, bread slices are like skin on the top and muscle below and the gynecomastia is like a meat in between.

Successful treatment of gynecomastia in Delhi means removing as much meat as possible and contouring the appropriate zones of the chest leaving a nice and smooth layer of normal fatty tissue that looks both masculine and angular.

The final result is affected by the following three factors:

  • The amount of tissue removed
  • The amount of tissue that remains
  • The underlying anatomy of your pectoral muscle and ribs

Also be sure to ask your surgeon about specific questions and what you can expect during your recovery period. The final results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent in many cases and if it resulted from the use of prescription medicines, drugs or weight gain, you must be fully free from these substances to maintain stable results.

Let us discuss in detail what happens post gynecomastia surgery at EVA Clinic Delhi.

The Night of Gynecomastia

  • Make sure you are up and walking around immediately after the surgery. When lying down in bed or on the couch, make sure you are moving your legs and ankles. Take deep breaths to keep your lungs clear.
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated about 30 to 40 degrees. Do not sleep on your side and keep your body more upright to minimize swelling and discomfort.

Medications after Gynecomastia

  • You will be prescribed pain medications post operation. If your discomfort does not settle down even after pain medications, Dr Hiranmayi Jha will recommend alternatives.
  • Nausea is a common side effect after strong medications. If you are experiencing nausea, we advise you to take nausea medications.
  • You will also experience constipation post surgery. In such situations, we recommend taking over the counter laxatives
  • Take only the medications which are approved by the surgeon.

Activities after Gynecomastia

  • Normal daily activities can be resumed after the surgery. Exercise can be resumed 1 to 2 weeks post surgery
  • Limit your arm use. Do not do vigorous heavy lifting for the first week. If it hurts, do not do it.
  • Wear compression garments the entire first week. The garment should fit snug and not too tight that you have trouble breathing.
  • Do not operate a vehicle or make important decisions until you are on pain meds.
  • Most patients return to work after 2 to 5 days depending on their job responsibilities.
  • Sexual activity can be resumed once you have healed properly.

Bathing after Gynecomastia

  • You need to shower with assistance following the surgery. Remove your garments and replace your garments after the shower. Incisions are usually covered with waterproof dressing.
  • Avoid taking baths in hot tubs, jacuzzi or swimming pools at least 2 weeks post surgery.

Taking care of Incisons

  • Your incisions are covered with waterproof dressing. After the post op visit, dressing will be removed and tapes are applied.
  • All stitches are dissolvable.
  • Avoid and minimise sun exposure.
  • Scars are small and may take time to heal. After your incisions have healed, you can begin to use ointments on the scars for complete healing.

Don'ts after Gynecomastia

  • Do not apply hydrogen peroxide to the incision site.
  • Do not take bath in jacuzzi or hot tubs until the incisions have fully healed.
  • Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen or other blood thinners until your surgeon advises
  • Do not apply heating pads or ice packets to the treated areas.

Emergency situations after Gynecimastia

  • Signs of Infection: Spreading redness, worsening swelling, increased drainage or drainage of pus, worsening pain, warmth at incision site and temperature over 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Excessive Bleeding: If the dressings are saturated with bright red blood and you are having to make very frequent dressing changes.
  • Other Emergency Situations: Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chest pain, lightheadedness that does not quickly resolve, severe vomiting, pain, or asymmetric swelling in your legs.

A Safe Recovery Is as Important as the Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery in Delhi  can create a flatter and more defined chest, but the result is not judged immediately after the procedure. Swelling, bruising, tightness and temporary changes in sensation can occur during the early healing period, and the chest contour gradually becomes clearer as swelling settles.

At EVA Clinic, Delhi, Dr Hiranmayi Jha, AIIMS alumnus, provides post-operative instructions according to the procedure performed, the amount of tissue removed and the patient's individual healing response. Follow-up visits are important to assess the incisions, swelling, chest symmetry and overall recovery. Patients should also follow the advised schedule for compression garments, medicines, exercise and return to normal activities rather than rushing the healing process.

Remember that recovery can vary from one patient to another. If you notice increasing pain, unusual swelling, persistent bleeding, fever, breathing difficulty or any other concerning symptom, contact your surgical team promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled appointment.

The aim of gynecomastia surgery is not simply to remove excess tissue, but to achieve a natural-looking, proportionate masculine chest contour while prioritising safe healing.
